The brass sculpture depicts Mariamman seated gracefully on an inverted lotus in the Lalitasana pose, with one leg folded inward and the other hanging down. She holds a drum with a serpent coiled around it in her rear right hand, while her left hand grasps a trident. In her front right hand, she wields a knife, and her left hand holds a small rice bowl. Mariamman's visage bears a serene, smiling expression, complemented by exquisite jewelry and intricately designed attire. Adorning her head is a tall, ornate flaming crown with a seven-headed serpent hood, a hallmark of Mariamman's iconography. Crafted from fine brass with meticulous detailing and a golden-yellow finish, this statue epitomizes the splendor of Mariamman.
Goddess Mariamma meaning "Mother Mari", spelt also Maariamma, is the South Indian Hindu goddess of rain. She is the main South Indian mother goddess, predominant in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Māri is closely associated with the Hindu goddesses Parvati and Durga as well as with her North Indian counterpart Shitala Devi and according to the local community traditions in many villages in South India, she is worshipped as Pidari, Gramadevata, Kaval deivam and in many more names and forms. She is often depicted as a fierce yet benevolent goddess, symbolizing both protection and healing. Mariamma is associated with curing diseases, particularly those related to poxes and fevers. She is depicted with a crown, adorned with serpents, and often holds a trident or a sword, signifying her power to ward off evil forces. Devotees offer prayers and sacrifices to seek her blessings for health, prosperity, and protection from malevolent influences.
