Brass Tara Bust: Filigree by Master Artisan Ram Kumar
Hand-crafted by master artisan Mr. Ram Kumar, a Nepal-trained craftsman now based in Old Delhi, this Brass Tara Bust took more than 30 days to complete. Thousands of hand-twisted brass wire spirals form its filigree, a craft very few artisans can still do. It is set with decorative red and green stones and detailed on every side.

The Story
In the lanes of Old Delhi, a 70-year-old artisan sits with spools of fine brass wire, steady hands, and a patience that few people today have.
Mr. Ram Kumar comes from Nepal, where he learned his craft. The Himalayan region has a long tradition of sacred metal art, and he spent 30 years there honing his skills. He later moved to India, and today he lives and works in the old city of Delhi. He brought with him a way of working that can’t be learned quickly or from a book.
This Tara bust took him more than 30 days to complete. He did not rush it or use a shortcut. He twisted thin brass wire by hand into thousands of tiny spirals, then placed each one onto the surface, curl by curl. Look closely at the bodice, the sleeves and the back. Every swirl was set by hand, and together they form a lace-like garment of metal that seems to move in the light.
This is brass filigree, one of the most demanding metal crafts there is. One uneven curl shows against the pattern around it, so mistakes are hard to hide. Fewer artisans take up this work each year, and very few can still do it at this level of detail. It takes years of practice and a willingness to spend a month on a single piece.
The Presence of Tara
Tara is revered across the Himalayan Buddhist tradition as the embodiment of compassion, the one who answers those who call for help. Her face here is calm. The lowered eyes are half closed, and the faint smile suggests quiet inner peace. The face is smooth and dark, left plain on purpose, so that all the intricate work around it draws your eyes back to her serenity.
Around that stillness is the ornament. She wears a tall, carved crown and a detailed headdress, with finely worked ears and earrings. Her collar is carved in relief, and ruby-red and emerald-green stones are set into her shoulders, chest and sleeves. On her back, a flower of stones sits in the middle of the spiral filigree, a detail many people miss until they turn the piece around. It was finished with as much care as the front.
The red and green stones are decorative, not natural gemstones. They are chosen for color and set carefully into the brasswork.
